Sláinte! St. Patrick's Day on the Hill

Alright party people: it’s time for the one day out of the whole year when everybody’s Irish.  So whether you’re an authentic lad or lassie, or simply looking for an excuse to drink beer all day long, it really makes no difference! Below, a sampling of special St. Paddy’s Day happenings on the Hill.  My mother’s maiden name is Fitzgerald and I’m engaged to a Mahoney so I speak with a great deal of authority on this issue.

The Pug on H Street will be opening Thursday at 10:30 am, showing all NCAA tournament games, and offering $5 Guinness and corned beef and cabbage sandwiches all day. Until 3:00 pm they’ll also have $10 bottomless mimosas, $4 Irish coffees and $7 bangers and hash, and bangers and eggs.

The Star and The Shamrock celebrates St. Patrick’s Day on the 17th of every month, and this Thursday will be no exception. Beginning at 11:00 am, they’ll offer $1 off Irish drafts & $5 Clontarf Irish Whiskey. Later in the day, you can dance an Irish gig alongside Klezcentricity, a Jewish klezmer band with Irish folk influences and then round out the night with the Sligo Creek Stompers, a local Irish folk act.

No surprise here, The Dubliner is making a weeklong affair of things, starting Monday at 6:00 pm with the Going Out Gurus from The Washington Post. On Thursday, they’ll have 3 bands on 2 stages, and a $10 Cover.

Also on Thursday, Rock and Roll Hotel is hosting a St. Patrick’s Party Trivia night, presented by Trivia Kings.

It’s Happy Hour all day long Thursday at Belga Café, as well as the début of a new lunch bar menu. And of course, Capitol Hill’s perennial Irish favorite, Kelly’s Irish Times will no doubt be the place where everyone ends up at the end of a long night.

If a day spent drinking yourself silly isn’t your cup of tea (or beer) — I suggest watching what I consider to be the best Irish movie of all time, Darby O’Gill & The Little People. It’s Sean Connery at his finest, circa 1959. Trust me, I’m Irish!

No love for the Times? It’s only been celebrating St.Paddy’s day for 30 years.

  2. @josh – 2nd to last paragraph.

  3. And, if you’d like something fun that doesn’t involve green beer, Labyrinth Games & Puzzles is holding their monthly Board Game Night on 3/17 from 6pm to 10pm. Mostly European style games (like Settlers of Catan, Dominion, etc.) are played and it usually gets really crowded fast. Beginners are welcome.
