Capitol Hill:

Pieces of DC History: National Capital Brewing Company

A reader sent us a picture of this awesome lithographed 1901 calendar from the National Capital Brewing Company of Washington DC.

Robert wrote about the brewing company way back in 2009 (wow, time has flown!). Now there is a push by enthusiastic fans to bring it back.

As explained by the founder and CEO, “The National Capital Brewing Company has a proud tradition of brewing quality beer in the region. A brewery with this name once operated where the Safeway supermarket on 14th and D Street, SE now stands. The name traces its roots to Albert Carry, a German immigrant who came to Washington after the Civil War. Carry was a self-made man, a prominent Washington brewer, real estate investor, banker and philanthropist. The brewery has a long and a significant history on Capitol Hill, however the name has not been used since the original business was closed by the Volstead Act and DC Prohibition in 1917.”
