During H Street, NE’s sidewalk reconstruction earlier this summer, new tree boxes were installed with large granite stones on the perimeter, filled in by 4-inch cube cobblestones installed at an angle to facilitate drainage.  In addition to drainage, I’ve also heard these smaller cobbles referred to as facilitators for B&E and grand theft auto.
