Farmer's Market Across from Watkins Field Opens Today

Nov (7 of 15)

Have you joined the cult of Michael Pollan and resolved to use more local produce this summer? You’re not alone! And now you can skip the poorly lit Safeway produce department and saunter over to the farmer’s market set up at intersection of 13th and E Street, SE. Start start googling now for recipes with strawberries, asparagus, tomatoes, spinach, beets, chard and collards. Isn’t your mouth watering?

You’ll find farmers produce from the Tuscarora Organic Growers Cooperative, a group of over 40 farms only 2.5 hours from DC. These farmers build upon the foundation of the FRESHFARM Markets’ FoodPrints program at Watkins and thriving school gardens. If you haven’t seen the bounty grown by these kids, check out the side gardens across from the CVS at 12th Street, SE.

The market sells only organic fruits and vegetables, and local products like honey and eggs come directly from the Tuscadora farms who make sure that they offer prices that are lower than Whole Foods and competitive with other local and organic markets in the area. The accept credit cards, SNAP/EBT, WIC/Senior FMNP, checks and, of course, cash. You can look forward to seeing the market set up each Wednesday through the fall. That’s a lot of fresh, healthy dinners!

Edit: The Watkins market will be open from 4-8 pm, June 5th through October 8th.
