We wanted to know what the mayoral candidates thought about some of the top issues for Ward 6, so we reached out to each candidate with a request to ask them a series of questions. David Catania, Carol Schwartz and Bruce Majors responded, despite grueling schedules and recent illness. Muriel Bowser, Nestor Djonkam and Faith were unable to work us into their schedules.

During our meetings–carried out at a place of the candidate’s own choosing– I asked each candidate the same six questions, which were not provided in advance. In the following audio recordings, you can hear their answers to our questions. The candidates appear listed in the same order as they will appear on the ballot. What Ward 6 issue is most important to you?

Q1–Economic Development: What would you do to continue cultivating small businesses that make the city and Ward 6 in particular so unique?

Follow-up: In particular, DRCA can be difficult for small businesses to navigate, especially as small businesses do not have additional staff to take care of compliance. Do you think there are opportunities to simplify regulations to make it easier for small businesses to comply?

Bruce Majors:

Q2 –What makes you/your party affiliation relevant to DC? What would make a person say, “I want to vote for you”?

Q3–Ward 6 has two Main Streets. This institutional focus on redevelopment has made a huge difference. Would your administration be willing to dedicate resources to find a solution for how to use Reservation 13? How about a vision for RFK and surrounding areas?

Q4–Crime control. The way Capitol Hill is situated with easy egress roads, there is a lot of cross-border cribe with Prince Georges county. We have good police relationships with DC and PG, but how can we better coordinate investigative and police efforts?

Q5–Ward 6/Capitol Hill is uniquely situated to connect the city. How do we better use our geography to connect the ward and unify them? What are your plans for a high line par, RFK grounds, Kingman Island, bike trails and parking lots abutting the river?

Q6–Where do you envision the streetcar will go next? Will it fully connect to Union Station? Will it connect with wards East of the River?

Finally, please share a short statement on why people should vote for you.
