ANC:

Meet the Candidates: Steve Hagedorn, ANC 6B05

We have offered to post brief statements from all of the ANC candidates running for seats on Capitol Hill and the surrounding neighborhoods that we cover here on The Hill is Home.  These statements are not endorsements and have been posted exactly as submitted by the candidates.

unnamedComing off the Mall in the early morning and running up Jenkins Hill past the Capitol I am always reminded of how fortunate we are to live in this community. The monuments, museums and a vibrant city behind me I return to the “village”, where a Senator is your neighbor, an author your friend and a small business owner your colleague. You meet them all running errands at Eastern Market.

For over 25 years I have watched our neighborhood grow from a sleepy enclave to a coveted destination. From Hill East to the Capitol, H Street to Barracks Row we are enriched by a diverse population and an abundance of social and cultural resources that have attracted new residents and nurtured young families. With growth comes change, challenging all of us to be careful stewards of this city’s most unique neighborhood.

That is why I hope to become the ANC Commissioner for ANC6B SMD05 with the following items in mind:

*Work for delivery of quality constituent services.

*Ensure that the Hine School developers adhere to the construction management plan regarding allowable hours of work, construction traffic flow and the impact on the neighborhood.

*Preserve Eastern Market by encouraging fiscal responsibility and building consensus with the vendors, management and neighbors.

*Address issues arising from the Eastern Market Metro Plaza redesign including funding and construction impact and work with MPD to curtail crime on the Plaza and elsewhere in Ward 6.

*Encourage pedestrian and bicycle safety by working with DDOT and MPD.

*Work with fellow commissioners, city and federal agencies and neighbors to curb the impact of the pending CSX tunnel construction.

*Hold the city accountable for improving Ward 6 Middle Schools.

*Encourage the development of Reservation 13 according to the 2007 Master Plan and work toward a solution for closing the DC General Shelter.

*Fight the Southeast Boulevard/Barney Circle Plan & reconnect Capitol Hill to the Anacostia River.

A little about me. Born and raised in Katonah, New York I attended Washington & Lee University in Lexington, VA, graduating with a degree in Journalism in 1973. I moved to Washington, DC to pursue a career in broadcast television.

I worked in both studio and field production as a camera operator, director, writer and producer, earning regional Emmy© awards and serving on the Board of Governors for the Regional Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences.

I moved to Capitol Hill in 1988 the same year I met my future wife Sue. Married in 1989, we bought a house on Corbin Place, NE in 1991.

On Labor Day Weekend of 2000, Sue and I moved to our current house at 9th & C Street, SE. Lured by the opportunity to spend more time in the neighborhood, I earned my DC Real Estate license in 2002 and joined a friend at Coldwell Banker (Pardoe). I am also licensed in Maryland.

Since then I have learned to appreciate our unique village even more. I serve as a Resident Member of the ANC6B Hill East Task Force. I am a member of CHAMPS and the Capitol Hill Restoration Society where I have served on the House Selection Committee and as House Captain for the Capitol Hill House & Garden Tour. A former sponsor of and participant in the Capitol Hill Classic benefiting the Cluster Schools, I am a continuing sponsor of the Dead Man’s Run at Historic Congressional Cemetery. Professional memberships include the District of Columbia Association of Realtors (DCAR), Great Capital Area Association of Realtors (GCAAR) and the National Association of Realtors (NAR). Along with my wife Sue, and hound Gibbs, I am a proud member of the K9 Corps at the Historic Congressional Cemetery where I also serve on the Development Committee.
