ANC:

Meet the Candidates: James Loots, ANC 6B03

We have offered to post brief statements from all of the ANC candidates running for seats on Capitol Hill and the surrounding neighborhoods that we cover here on The Hill is Home.  These statements are not endorsements and have been posted exactly as submitted by the candidates.

unnamed-1Jim Loots has lived on Capitol Hill for more than 30 years, where he maintains a law practice serving primarily Capitol Hill residents and small businesses.   He is married to Barbara Dougherty and has three children, all of whom attend or graduated public schools in DC, the youngest now at Brent Elementary. Throughout his years on the Hill, Jim has been involved, personally and professionally, in many issues affecting our community. He is currently on the Board of Capitol Hill Association of Merchants and Professionals, is a former trustee of Capitol Hill United Methodist Church, two-term board member of the Capitol Hill Arts Workshop, and has served with the Stanton Park Neighborhood Association. He has been active in issues affecting our seniors, both in the community and as a board member of Legal Counsel for the Elderly. For eight years, he served as volunteer Chair of the District of Columbia Commission on Human Rights, combating discrimination in employment and public accommodations.   He received the District of Columbia Distinguished Public Service Award from then-mayor Anthony Williams, and was also awarded the D.C. Bar “Pro Bono Lawyer of the Year” honor for his volunteer legal services.

He believes that his experience advocating for clients as an attorney would translate well into service on the ANC. “Many of the issues I deal with on a day-to-day basis involve securing city services and negotiating the complex regulatory labyrinth of the District government. I have a working knowledge and good relationships at city agencies that deal with constituent issues coming before the ANC, and believe that would inform and assist my tasks as a Commissioner.”

Jim Loots has been endorsed by Councilmember Tommy Wells and retiring incumbent ANC6B03 Commissioner Phil Peisch. More information about his candidacy and position on specific issues is available on his website: www.votesforloots.org.
