ANC:

Meet the Candidates: Diane Hoskins, ANC 6B02

We have offered to post brief statements from all of the ANC candidates running for seats on Capitol Hill and the surrounding neighborhoods that we cover here on The Hill is Home.  These statements are not endorsements and have been posted exactly as submitted by the candidates.

unnamedI am Diane Hoskins and I’m running for a seat on the Advisory Neighborhood Commission for 6B-02 because like you, I love our neighborhood and I am proud to call it home. You can count on me to be thoughtful, collaborative, energetic and fair.

On the ANC, I will champion efforts to improve public safety, advocate smart and sustainable development that works for the character and quality of life in our neighborhood, and build open lines of communication to help solve problems.

Feeling safe at home and in our neighborhood is important to us all and as commissioner, I will work to improve public safety by championing improved lighting, especially on the 600 block of Pennsylvania Avenue and the northern part of Eastern Market Metro Park. As plans to improve the Eastern Market Metro Park move forward, I will strongly support the expansion of the Southeast Library.

The success of Barracks Row continues to offer exciting new dining options but this has not been without noticeable impacts to our neighborhood. Balancing new growth with neighborhood livability is absolutely critical and a top priority. The Eastern Market Neighborhood has had some of these same tensions but with the Hine Development and the potential of more restaurants on 7th St., the stakes are even higher. From adequate trash storage, odor mitigation measures, and sound controls, I will advocate a balanced approach to new development. For example, in a recent case before the ANC, I successfully engaged with other neighbors to help ensure new development plans included adequate indoor trash containment – this maintains cleanliness and creates no new opportunities for rodents.

Over the next three or more years, the Hine School re-development project is expected to move forward. From demolition to construction, I will work to limit and mitigate the impacts of the redevelopment process on our neighborhood by actively enforcing the Construction Management Agreement and fully supporting the Community Advisory Committee.

About Me
I was born in Washington DC, the daughter of a firefighter and federal civil servant who taught me the importance of serving and giving back to the community. Currently, I work at a non-profit advocacy group on environmental issues where I lead the organization’s government relations efforts to help protect and restore special coastal places across the country for current and future generations. Previously, I worked for The Nature Conservancy on national climate change policy, the District Department of Environment as Parks Program Manager, and EcoEnterprises Fund. I also served with AmeriCorps where I was involved with Gulf Coast recovery and rebuilding projects after Hurricane Katrina. I graduated from University of Maryland, summa cum laude in Resource Economics.
