We have a few weeks before we are in full on Fall Festival mode so get ready. Meanwhile here are a few ways to spend this weekend.

Tonight at the Hill Center is a new film series focusing on movies set right here in DC.  It is hosted by the Hill Rag film critic and author of Hollywood on the Potomac, Mike Canning. Tonight’s entry is a Walter Matthau – Jill Clayburgh vehicle about the first woman to join the Supreme Court:  First Monday in October. The screening begins at 7:30 and is free. More information on the upcoming films in the series (DC Cab!!) can be found here.

Saturday is the First Annual Day of Learning at Gallaudet University.  From 11am-6pm attendees can get an introduction to hand dancing,  getting the low-down on mixing the city’s signature cocktail (the Gin Rickey),  explore D.C.’s neighborhoods and dialect.Guest speakers will include Derek Brown, award-winning mixologist and owner of several of DC’s top bars; Susan Piedmont-Palladino, curator at the National Building MuseumIan Mackaye of Fugazi and Dischord Records; Beverly Lindsay JohnsonPresident of the National Hand Dance Association; Hansel Bauman, Campus Architect at Gallaudet University; and Scott Kratz, Director of the 11th Street Bridge Park and more.  A full list of speakers can be found here: www.dayoflearning.org

This suggestion is a little beyond our generous Hill boundaries but we make exceptions for beer. Celebrate the first anniversary of Atlas Brew Works. They plan to open the brewery doors, take over the street and throw a big party.  The day includes beer, food trucks and bands.  Ticket price includes admission to the event, your first beer, AND a donation to the Washington Humane Society.
The party goes from 1 to 5 pm at the brewery located at 2052 West Virginia Ave. NE.
Ticket are $10 and are available here.

Sunday check out London’s Globe Theatre’s production of King Lear starring Joseph Marcell, better known on this side of the Atlantic as Geoffrey the English butler on the TV show The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. The show opens this weekend and runs through September 21st. Tickets are available here.
