The Grammy-winning eighth blackbird performs at the Atlas this weekend

Hey folks, what do you have planned for this weekend? Here’s some ideas…

Tonight check out the Atlas’ monthly happy hour series they’re calling Atlas After Dark. From 6-9 pm the Atlas cafe will run drink specials and there is music by Nistha Raj, a talented local musician who plays  the 5 string violin in both Eastern and Western styles. DJ RBI will tag team with Nistha to keep the lobby filled with music.

Friday morning Capitol Hill Village is presenting a free seminar to discuss the important issues involved in such a decision.  Is owning a condo always better?  Is renting just “throwing money away”? Three local finance and real estate experts will discuss the options of renting an apartment and buying a condominium.  From 10am -12pm.  The seminar will be held in the meeting room at the Townhomes on Capitol Hill, at the corner of I St, SE and 6th St., SE, with the entrance on I St., SE. It is free but you must reserse your spot ahead of time.  Call Capitol Hill Village at 543-1778 to register.

Friday night the Hill Center gets a little racy with a new film and discussion series about pre-Hays code Hollywood, Tough Dames in Satin Slips. In the days before the ratings system was strictly enforced, some films took on a darker, sexier edge. Tonight’s feature is the Barbara Stanwyck Baby Face. The film starts at 7 and is free but you should register here.

The Grammy-winning new music super group eighth blackbird performs at the Atlas Friday and Saturday evenings. These super talented musicians are bringing a new composition that has the musicians performing commedia dell ‘arte style. All high drama and masks which suits the tale of Columbine and her two loves Pierrot and Harlequin.  Friday night come early for a pre show wine tasting with wines from Boxwood winery, beer from Atlas Brew Works and treats from H Street’s newest restaurant Red Rocks. Tickets are here and the tasting is free.

Saturday DC Brau is taking over the taps at Sonoma. I had no idea they even had taps but that’s neither here nor there. The evening begins at 5pm with a casual meet-and-greet with Chef Hutter and friends from DC Brau. Once the dining starts, guests will enjoy a special three course menu plus amuse (a local braised pork belly “lollipop”) paired with DC Brau’s Public, Corruption, and Penn Quarter Porter.  The menu will include PEI mussels, with IPA, garlic, chilis and oregano followed by Local Beef Short Ribs braised with ME Swing Coffee and Penn Quarter Porter with a caramelized carrot puree. Even dessert will include beer with a Ginger Infused Beer with housemade gelato float. Learn more and reserve your spot here.

Saturday night check out the new production, Black Ameri-I-Can, from local tap and percussive dance company, SOLE Defined at the Atlas. Led by Qyunn Johnson and Ryan Johnson (from Broadway’s STOMP) the duo have created a piece about identity and being true to your self that includes multimedia, theatre, percussive dance and of course some killer tapping.  Shows are both Friday and Saturday night and tickets can be found here.

Saturday night is also the Hilly Awards! A chance to dress up and mingle with all your favorite business owners and non-profits.

Why don’t you start that holiday shopping before Thanksgiving this year? Sundays are perfect wandering-around-Eastern-Market days so get there before the holiday crowds and you can be finished with your gift list before you’ve even baked one pie.

Jen DeMayo is Director of Community for the Atlas Performing Arts Center.
