To Do

irr5Hope everyone had a happy Halloween! What’s ahead for the weekend folks?

Friday through Sunday the Hill Center is hosting a huge ceramics event, called Pottery on the Hill. Sixteen of the nation’s top ceramic artists will gather and show-off ceramic table platters, fanciful mugs, one-of-a-kind cups, cooking pots, vases, and other whimsical and functional pieces. Many items are for sale.

Tonight is the preview reception. Tickets are $25 and available here.  Saturday, the former Washington football player Chris Cooley will be on-hand to meet and greet fans and discuss his artwork and pieces. From noon to 2 p.m., Chris will give a brief talk about the intersection of sports and art. The discussion is free but you might want to register ahead of time.

Are you a fan of gravestones? Or, maybe you didn’t think you were until you read this…. Well then get in on the ground floor and attend the very first meeting ever of  DC Metro Chapter of the Association for Gravestone Studies. The first meeting will be held at the Congressional Cemetery Chapel on Saturday, Nov. 2nd from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. More information here.

Sunday our resident historians/authors/tour guides at THIH give talks. THIH’s Robert Pohl will be at the Southeast Library at 1:30 p.m. to discuss his recently released book. This is a kid-friendly discussion of the stories we tell about our beloved city. Then, at 3 p.m. THIH’s Time Krepp will be discussing his latest book, The Ghosts of Georgetown. Admission and snacks are free.

And don’t forget to swing by The Atlas on Sunday. They are hosting the British Art-Pop orchestra The Irrepressibles. This is music created by artist/composer/multi-instrumentalist Jamie Irrepressible. Their debut album Mirror Mirror (2010) received international acclaim and is considered to be a must have album for baroque pop. The concert is at 8 p.m. and tickets are $15 in advance and $18 at the door. More information about the band and tickets can be found here.
