So back in late October (late October?!) when Whole Foods finally confirmed they would be anchoring the new building at 800 New Jersey SE, most people were extremely happy. Well, no — most rejoiced. And then there were some who groused about the meaning of Whole Foods coming to our neighborhood. And so, as it happens when your neighborhood is so uncommonly large and zeitgeisty (at least in terms of food acquisition) we are now super popular!
The Washington Post’s Jonathan O’Connell reports that Whole Foods has signed a lease to open a store in the 600 block of H Street, NE. But don’t we have enough grocery stores already? Aaron Wiener of Washington City Paper tweeted the following:
H Street Whole Foods will be 3 blocks from new Giant, 7 blocks from Walmart, 0.7 miles from H. Teeter, 1.7 miles from Navy Yard Whole Foods.

Aaron didn’t even mention the Aldi and Safeway stores at 15th and Maryland, NE (0.8 miles), as well as the Safeway at 5th and L Streets NW, which would be 1.5 miles away from this new Whole Foods.
What do you think, Capitol Hill? Feel free to check off as many options in our super-duper deluxe snarky poll this morning. The snarkiest comment gets a shoutout on Twitter and a share of the Halloween candy that I won’t let my kids eat. Ready? Set. GO!
WAIT A MINUTE? YOU MEAN TO TELL ME THAT, IN A CAPITALIST SOCIETY, A BUSINESS HAS DECIDED THAT A TIPPING POINT WAS REACHED WITHIN A SET DISTANCE FROM A COMMERCIAL DISTRICT, AND THEY’VE DECIDED TO OPEN A RETAIL OUTLET WITHIN SAID DISTRICT TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THAT CAPITAL? THIS IS NEWSWORTHY!
Be still, weak heart. It is the east, and IMGoph’s comment is the sun.
With two Whole Foods (Foodses?) so close together AND so many other grocery stores in such close proximity (and don’t forget the Yes! Market), I’m hoping it means neither will have the usual WF insane clusterfuck of rudeness and grocery-cart roller derby one usually has to deal with there….
