To Do

Gregory Maqoma performs Exit/Exist at the Atlas this weekend.

So now that we are all back to work and making up for all that lost time, some of you may not have the freedom to check out all the fun stuff going on this weekend. But, just in case you can spare a moment or two…

Tonight, indulge your inner poetic, angsty teen and check out the Folger’s production of Romeo and Juliet. Sure you know the ending, but that’s not why we’re still doing these plays over and over again. Go for the gorgeous language (which the new film based upon the play does NOT use. Grr.) The sonnet that R and J share when they meet at the party scene always gets me. Ah, young love: so thrilling and so, so stupid. Romeo and Juliet runs through December 1st and tickets are available here.

Tomorrow night, the Atlas presents South African-born dancer and choreographer Gregory Maqomo in his piece Exit/Exist. Maqoma was looking for a subject to create a piece around and discovered an ancestor, Chief Maqoma who battled the British in the 19th Century. The piece employs contemporary and traditional techniques while exploring themes of colonialism and displacement. This weekend only. Tickets are $20-$38.50 and are available here.

Saturday you can begin your holiday shopping at the CHAW student Ceramic  sale at Eastern Market.  The sale runs from 10am-4pm both Saturday and Sunday and will feature a range of student work.  More information can be found here.

More bargains can be found at the Market that day at the River Park Nursery School Yard Sale which will set up shop outside the Rumsey Aquatic Center (635 North Carolina Ave SE) from 8am to 1pm. Get there early because the good stuff will get snatched up. Some items include a wine fridge, razor scooter, child’s bikes, flat screen TV, cherry convertible crib, jumperoo, train table, children’s desk, and rugs. If it rains the sale will be held same time and place on Sunday.

That evening is, of course, the Dead Man’s Run which Lauren has already warned you about. It is things like this run that make me almost wish I didn’t hate running so very much.

Sunday afternoon get back over to the cemetery for the first fall concert in the chamber music series Notes from the Crypt.  What better way to end a weekend, enjoying beautiful music in a peaceful setting.  Following the hour-long concert, visitors are invited to an informal wine and cheese reception.

If you’d prefer something slightly livelier and weirder, check out the Swedish fiddler at the Hill Center. Okay, it’s one Swedish fiddler who has teamed up with a Norwegian-American fiddler and a dude that likes traveling to northern Europe.  Andrea Hoag, Loretta Kelley and Charlie Pilzer‘s trio’s CD Hambo in the Snow was nominated for a Grammy so these folks are no slouches. The play instruments such as hardingfeles. The evening will include a discussion moderated by local traditional music guru Mary Cliff from WETA. The afternoon kicks off at 3:30 and should wrap up around 6. Tickets are $15 and can be purchased here.
