To Do

The gloomy rain and the shutdown are a deathly combo that have me fantasizing about days spent in bed snuggled up with an all day Jane Austenathon or perhaps a full on Simpsons retrospective.  If you are able to hold it together and leave the house this weekend here are a few ideas.

Tonight riot grrrl, friend of Carrie Brownstein and DC resident Mary Timony brings her new band Ex Hex. The band is opening for The Obits in an all ages show which begins at 8pm. Tickets are $12 and the doors open at 7pm http://www.rockandrollhoteldc.com/

Friday at 8pm Malian guitarist and singer Vieux Farka Touré, son of Grammy- winner Ali Farka Touré, performs at the Atlas. The Hill Center‘s Friday night documentary explores the mystery of the Lindbergh baby kidnapping. This tragic mystery has intrigued people for decades and NOVA returns to the case in this documentary.  Larry Klein, the producer and director, will discuss the making of the film and answer audience post-show questions. The screening is free and begins at 7pm. Saturday stock up on good reads for winter at the Southeast Library ( 403 7th St. S.E) monthly book sale.The sale runs from 10am to 3pm .Entrance to the sale is through the library (and down the stairs) or through the basement door on the D street side.  Generally one can choose among new and mostly used books of all types, including children’s books, fiction, best sellers, non-fiction, mysteries, science, science fiction, romance, religion, history, biography, self-help, classics, travel, etc.

That night flutist, MacArthur grantee and super talented Claire Chase returns to the Atlas for a solo recital. Chase has performed at the venue twice with her International Contemporary Ensemble but this time it is just her and her pipes. See and hear what genius sounds like. If you are interested in being terrified, head over to 50 Florida Avenue for Gravensteen Productions The Curse of Frau Muller. Using actors, lighting and scenic effects and a spooky tale of a serial child murderer to gave you the ultimate haunted house experience. Sunday afternoon J.O. Wilson hosts its annual auction and fundraiser, A Taste of H Street at the Atlas. The auction is a food tasting featuring the cuisine of local restaurants, wine, jazz and a live and silent auction, with all proceeds going to JO Wilson.  Tommy Wells will be master of ceremonies and Chancellor Kaya Henderson will make an appearance.
