To Do

Corey Harris appears at the Atlas Saturday night.

My apologies for no To Do column last week. We had technical difficulties here and then I split town. I hope you were able to piece together a weekend without our carefully culled list of activities.

Tonight the Atlas welcomes singer Christine Salem. She is one the leader singers of maloya, a traditional style of music from the island of Reunion. She is a dynamic and engaging performer who really broke out at New York’s Globalfest, a world music festival. Show starts at 8pm. Tickets are available on the Atlas website and if you are a furloughed government worker they are half-price. Use the code FED50 at check out. Tickets are available here.

Friday it is time for the Riot Grrrls of Taffety Punk. This fantastic local theatre troupe devotes one production a year to an all-girl interpretation of a work by Shakespeare. This time they ignore the comedies and romances and instead have taken on a lesser-known work Titus Andronicus.  We are talking women in gladiator gear. Their motto for the Riot Grrl show? Great actresses should play great parts. Can you tell I love this? The show runs through October 26th at CHAW and tickets are a mere $15. Get them here. Don’t let the cheap ticket fool you into thinking this is amateur hour. These are well trained classical actors and you are likely in for a great night of theatre.

Saturday is the annual Blessing of the Animals at 10am at Lincoln Park which is sponsored by St. Monica’s and St. James Episcopal Church. If your pet can not be there you are welcome to bring photos or drawings of you best friend. Free.

Saturday night blues and reggae performer and MacArthur fellow Corey Harris brings his band to the Atlas. He’s know for always seeking the African roots to these contemporary art forms. These tickets are also half-price for the furloughed, FED50 is the code. More infor and tickets can be found here.

Sunday evening local bluegrass faves Dead Man’s Hollow is back at the Hill Center to close out your weekend with a performance focusing on the Civil War. They will be perfoming songs from the era as well as contemporary songs dealing with the war and its aftermath. Letter and diary entries will be performed by actors from the Guillotine Theatre. Think of it as a live-action Ken Burns piece. Tickets are $15 in advance and $20 at the door. You can get them here.
