I’m not going to talk about the heat. But, I will talk about how to avoid the outdoors this weekend.

Tonight: Enjoy the sweet, cold air conditioning at the Atlas Performing Arts Center. Catch either Oscar Wilde’s Salome, the story of Herod’s daughter who had such a crush on John the Baptist, she asked for his head on a platter. It’s complicated. Or, go see Sandaya: Burmese Lessons, a tale of modern day Burma through the eyes of an American musician. More info and tickets are here.

Friday night: Catch the end of the Capitol Hill Chamber Music Festival . This is your chance to hear music played on period instruments in the neighborhood. The concert will feature music from the French Baroque—“little concerts” written for Louis XIV.  It begins at 7:30 p.m. A suggested donation for adults is $20 or $25. Kids 18 and under are free.

Saturday: Head to Capitol Hill Books for free wine and cheese and 10 percent off all book purchases. The event is open to everyone, but the wine is for adults-only. More info at their Facebook page.

Saturday at 3 p.m. catch To Kill A Mockingbird.  The Oscar-winning film version of Harper Lee’s classic novel with Gregory Peck as Atticus Finch and a young Robert Duvall as the mysterious Boo Radley is part of the March on Washington Film Festival, running July 11-25th. Popcorn will be served!  at Lutheran Church of the Reformation (212 East Capitol St.) Tickets and info here.

Sunday members of the Choir of the Evgeni Mikeladze Central Music School from Tbilisi, Republic of Georgia, and Niavi, a DC-based Georgian a cappella group perform at Hill Center. Tickets are $15 for adults and $5 for children. Purchase tickets online.  The choir was created in 2010 to perform the centuries-old traditional folk and sacred choral music of the Republic of Georgia. The group is conducted by Badri Jimsheleishvili, a professional singer who has toured in Europe and the U.S. as Director of the internationally-known Chanters Group from the Church of St Panteleimon the Healer, in Tbilisi.

Celebrate National Ice Cream Day by eating FREE ice cream at Union Market. The DC Scoop is a family-friendly event with activities for all ages. Enjoy ice cream cooking demonstrations, a book signing with ice cream expert Cesar Vega, and music.  The Hill’s own Boogie Babes will present music performances by local favorites The Singing LizardOh Susannahand Mr. Skip. Sample free tastes from local frozen treat pushers and purchase full size scoops of your own. There is even a kids ice cream eating contest with youngsters competing to see who can finish a bowl the fastest. Ice cream headache in the making, but winning is winning. The event is free and runs from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.
