To Do

Hey everyone. So we know that the ubiquitous weekend stop(s) at Frager’s cannot happen so does anyone know what to do with my husband who makes 2-4 trips there on a typical weekend?

(Apparently there will be a Frager’s pop up at Eastern Market so yay!)

What else can we do this weekend?

Kids and grown ups alike love Step Afrika!. The world’s first professional company dedicated to the art and tradition of stepping makes their home here on the Hill at the Atlas but they spend most of the year on the road. Most recently they were in the former Yugoslavia performing and teaching. Each June they come home to showcase their latest work. This year they have teamed up with a classical composer and the result is Symphony in Step. So chances are this will be unlike any step show you may have seen in college. The show runs all weekend and tickets are available here.

Friday night the Hill Center is screening  Three on a Match, a  racy, hard-boiled movie from pre-Code Hollywood, the era when movie censorship was not yet in full force. Three on a Match follows three New York gal pals – or perhaps they would better referred to as broads (Joan Blondell, Bette Davis and Ann Dvorak) – from the Jazz Age to the Depression, as they find jobs, boyfriends, and for one of them, drugs and debauchery. A book signing and discussion of Talbot’s book The Entertainer: Movies, Magic, and my Father’s Twentieth Century will follow. Her book is about her dad, actor Lyle Talbot who appears in the film. Books will be available for sale. The screening is free and begins at 7pm. Register here.

Over at CHAW, modern day burlesque troupe Buleaque Classique is hosting nerdtastic which they describe as “the fantastic alchemy of combining burlesque and all things nerdy – fantasy, sci-fi, comics, games, role-playing, and more. We promise to ecstatically entice your body and electrically excite your neurons.” I hope they do something about the Red Wedding though true GoT nerds were not surprised by Sunday’s episode.  Tickets are $15 and can be purchased here. The performance starts at 8pm.

Saturday morning is Family Garden Day at the Washington Youth Garden at the Arboretum. Families are invited to explore the Washington Youth Garden and learn by doing, get tips on how to take care of your own organic garden, harvest fresh produce  and work with a local chef or nutrition expert to prepare a light lunch with the harvest. The event runs from 10am to 12:30pm. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for kids and can be purchased here.

The Friends of the Southeast Library is hosting a book sale on Saturday from 10am to 2pm.

Are you feeling like a failure as a parent because your kids don’t know King Lear from Richard III? Well shame on you and here’s how you can change that. Playwright Ken Ludwig has written a new book, How to Teach Your Children Shakespeare. Enjoy an interactive pre-show discussion on Twelfth Night with the author and a book-signing. The discussion is free but you must register here.  Have you not seen Twelfth Night yet? There is still time and Claudia loved it.

Saturday afternoon Capitol Hill Books is hosting a Wine and Cheese event from 4pm -7pm. The event is free and should you feel like shopping they will take 10% off of any purchases. Capitol Hill Books is located at 657 C St SE, across the street from Eastern Market as well as the Frager’s pop up.
