Four-Alarm Fire at Frager's

A four-alarm fire has engulfed Capitol Hill hardware store and landmark Frager’s — located at the corner of 11th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue SE. From official Twitter accounts such as Charles Allen (@CharlesAllenDC) and eyewitness reports, we know that the fire most likely started at the receiving shed behind the paint store. As of post time, the fire is not contained and has spread to other bulidings in the block. Since it was closing time, employees were safe. The streets around Frager’s are closed right now, and WMATA reports that lines 32, 34 and 36 are being rerouted. Photos via Twitter show that the plume of black smoke can be seen across the river, from the ballpark, and as far as Alexandria, VA, and upper Northwest.

Frager’s recently celebrated 93 years of serving the Capitol Hill community, hosting Easter Egg hunts, helping us fix our rickety Victorian homes, providing friendly service and just the right thing we were looking for.

Stay tuned for more updates.

UPDATE: Please exercise caution– toxic chemicals like pesticides are currently burning inside the store. Make sure to rinse off and wash your clothes when you get home.

UPDATE 8:31 pm: DCFD Local 36 tweeted  (@IAFF36) ” Units making progress on 4 alarm #caphilldc unfortunately going to be an all night operation.” Charles Allen (@CharlesAllenDC) tweeted (8:31 pm) “All parts of building a total loss.”
