To Do

So it’s finally Spring I hope. How shall we spend this glorious weekend??

Celebrate Sousa Saturday

Celebrate Sousa Saturday

Tonight sing a song of the Anacostia at the Hill Center. Local singer songwriters will share their songs and stories about the Anacostia River. Hill residents/musicians Sarah Hill, Lee Cain and Chuck Schwartz are the performers at this free, family-friendly event which runs from 6:30 – 8:30. Learn more about the performers and the project here.

You love the Hill, we love the Hill. We never ever want to leave! (Unless priced out…ugh.) But, if we’re lucky, time will catch up to all of us eventually. These row houses may be tricky to manage as you head into the golden years. Lucky for you, and us, Capitol Hill Village is working on making it possible for all of us to stay in our homes as long as possible or “age in place.”  This Friday Capitol Hill Village is holding a day-long Housing Symposium about housing options May 3rd at the Hill Center.  The event, which will run from 8:30am to 4:00pm, includes speakers on topics ranging from home renovations to accommodate physical limitations, sites for one-level living on and near Capitol Hill, and options when full-time care is required.  The event is free to all.  Call Capitol Hill Village at 202-543-1771 for additional information and to register.

Only on Capitol Hill do we regularly hold parties and picnics in a cemetery. Because we celebrate what we’ve got and we’ve got the remains of America’s first rock star right here… Saturday is Sousa Palooza at Congressional Cemetery. There will be a scavenger hunt all day (“Find J. Edger kids!”) a tour, a lecture by John Phillip Sousa IV, musical performances and a spaghetti sauce contest. Wait … what?? Oh, it was his favorite food. I’ve never thought to put allspice or cloves in my sauce… A list of the day’s activities can be found here.

The Literary Hill Bookfest takes place on Saturday in the North Hall of Eastern Market from 11am -3pm. This festival celebrates the many authors skulking around the neighborhood. Several will be on hand to give talks about their work. Our own Tim Krepp will speak about his terrifying tome, Capitol Hill Haunts, at 2:30.

Sunday is Cinco deMayo, thank you. While it’s not actually Mexican Independence Day, it is a day when the calendar gives us a reason to indulge in guacamole and margaritas. The Hill Center is taking this a step further with a No Limit Texas Hold’em” poker tournament hosted by All in Enterprises.  I am not a poker player but this sounds serious and involves lots of money. AND an all you can eat Mexican Buffet and margaritas for additional purchase.  For you card sharks looking to get in on the game, all the relevant info is here
