Got Plantable Space?

The District has made some strides lately towards becoming a greener, healthier place to live. The Mayor’s recently-released Sustainable DC Plan has set some goals, but we know how difficult it will be to attain these… without your help.

We’ve done a lot of work in Capitol Hill and Ward 6 over the years. Spanning as far back as 2004 to most recently at the beginning of April, we’ve planted all over – and yet, the area has only 17% canopy, well below the 40% goal. We know that the opportunity is there to double that number, and there are two ways of you can help do it:

  •  Take care of the canopy already in Capitol Hill. If you already have trees on your street, in your park, or on your own property, learn how to take care of them. They don’t require much – we’ll be sharing some specific tips for seasonal tree care in Capitol Hill with The Hill is Home soon. Identify plantable space in Capitol Hill. We’ve planted in Congressional Cemetery, Green Seed Community Garden and Maury Elementary School;but no one knows your neighborhood like you, and we appreciate that. The next time you’re going for a run or heading home from work, consider one question: “Got Plantable Space?” If the answer is yes, then Casey Trees’ Community Tree Planting program is the next step.
  • We provide the trees, tools, and technical assistance for hundreds of plantings around the District in the fall and spring every year – all you have to do is submit an application. Let us know of a place you think could use 10 or more trees in the larger Capitol Hill neighborhood and we’ll make it easy to make a difference.

No one knows your neighborhood like you. Help us give it a greener future.
