Old School D.C., Remembering Some of Our Favorite Places of the Past

“You’re actually from D.C.?” If I only had a dollar for every time I heard that one.

And no, I am not actually all that rare in being a D.C. native.  A lot of D.C. — and Hill — natives have made their way back after college or spending a few years living elsewhere. Some never even left.

And, a lot of residents, while not natives, have lived here for 20, 30 or even 40+ years.  For those folks, and anyone who loves old pictures of our city, I have your procrastination excuse for the day.

In January a new Facebook page, Old Time D.C., popped up, posting photos of D.C. from decades ago. Based on the first pictures posted, which were mostly of Capitol Hill, it seemed the page’s creator was from our neighborhood.

And, it’s clear from captions that he or she went to Peabody, then Capitol Hill Day School and then the Field School, a path many Hill kids I grew up with took.  Seeing some of these old photos is a great trip down memory lane for anyone who lived here in the 80’s and 90’s.

Remember Sherrill’s Diner? Sam’s Convenience Store on Lincoln Park? Erol’s Video? There’s also Trover’s Book Store, The Atlas before it was revived, the Old Hawk ‘n’ Dove, the Cootie Bug at the old Children’s Museum…it goes on. There are also pictures from all over the city, and even this gem of the Dupont Circle metro stop being built.

Add your own old photos if you happen to have any, and enjoy a glimpse into how the Hill, and DC for that matter, has changed over the last few decades.

What were your favorite spots on the Hill that are no longer around? Post your favorites in the comments below.
