Crime Reports: A Message from Chief Lanier

mpdc-logoYou might have noticed that we skipped our crime reports the last two weeks.  That is because, due to a computer issue, the reports from MPD were not posting to the listservs.  MPD Chief of Police Cathy Lanier updated listerv subscribers on Monday saying:

“I wanted to apologize for the recent issues related to the daily posting of the crime report to each of the District listserves.  Due to a technical issue, the report was not posting to the listserves this past week.  I know this is an important resource for many of you, and I apologize for the inconvenience.  I assure you that we are addressing the problem and the 24-hour crime report will be back up on the listserves this week.  The arrest reports for each District will be back online as soon as possible.  Please note that the year-to-date citywide crime data is available Monday through Friday on our website, www.mpdc.dc.gov.  Additionally, the Crime Mapping application should be back up and running for your use near the end of this week.”

As of this evening, the daily reports seem to have resumed, so we will resume our posts next week.

I’m also happy to hear the last bit of news in which she reported that the Crime Mapping application will be back up an running at the end of this week.  That was a very valuable tool in the past and has been down since last fall because of “an internal upgrade of the records management system used by our officers and the consolidation of some legacy systems.”

Anyone who has managed databases and websites knows what that means and understands the headache of migrating and consolidating systems. Considering the amount of data, this must have been a pretty massive undertaking. We’re looking forward to seeing the system back up and running again!
