Meet the Candidates: Ed Kaminski, ANC 6D02

We have offered to post brief statements from all of the ANC candidates running for seats on Capitol Hill and the surrounding neighborhoods that we cover here on The Hill is Home.  These statements are not endorsements and have been posted exactly as submitted by the candidates.

Hello, my name is Ed Kaminski and I am a November 6th candidate for the Single Member Commissioner office 6DO2.  This election cycle, the 6D02 office is a redefined district that brings southwest and southeast Ward 6 residents together in one neighborhood ANC post.

My focus on community progress was key to my election as the second owner-resident Board member of the Capitol Riverfront Improvement District (BID).  Similarly, at Velocity Condominium, my commitment to community was important to my election as the first President of the Velocity Condominium Association.  I also hold office as Vice President of the 1150K Condominium Association in downtown.

On both sides of South Capitol Street, there is an exciting enterprise underway, these changes will shape this community and create accessible, lively waterfront neighborhoods; today, our community joined with Capitol Hill and South West is alive with new people, new building activity, commerce, cultural centers and sports. Together these developments are moving the City to the water’s edge, restoring urban elements and creating great river-oriented places for all District residents.

But I believe more can be done to speed our way to this vision; more can be done from the City to attract new residents and families with better services and attention to city infrastructure.

I am on a mission to focus the ANC on lagging City infrastructure and insuring citizen friendly services.  An ANC that serves to concentrate the force of citizen voters on outcomes will be much more effect than an ANC that serves as a yes or no citizen’s proxy for the next step in a city approval process.

The 6D ANC can engage citizens where our City is not serving Capitol Riverfront change; look more closely and see that Randall Park remains an unimproved parks and Van Ness Elementary a shuttered school that could serve growing families.  Parking enforcement for high-rise residents is a frustration to our residents.  See this video http://www.youtube.com/user/VoteEdKaminski.

If elected, I will be an uncompromising ANC advocate for improvements in the 6D public realm including streetscape, infrastructure, transportation, parking, safety, education and parks.

I hold to a simple idea: Citizens engage with government, they weigh in on their objectives (opening a school, modernizing a park, improving safety, better parking options), government moves to serve the forces of voters engagement in the political process, and the residents enjoy and care for places they helped make.

We can do better and I would like your support at the voting booth on November 6th to make these changes happen faster. There is lots of work to be done.  I, Ed Kaminski, hope to be honored by your support on November 6th to play a key roll in making that future happen for 6D02.  Please drop me a line at kaminskied@comcast.net if you have a specific interest regarding schools, the future of our parks, parking, safety, commercial development or other topics.
