To Do

Hey everybody. September really rivals December in opportunities to party. Our little corner of DC is festival central this weekend.  With last week’s mega-popular H Street festival and the upcoming Barracks Row festival, not to mention Veg Fest and the National Book festival? I’m exhausted and it’s only Thursday.

Let’s just take a look at what is going on this weekend.

Tonight at 8pm The Corner Store hosts Franky Solivan and The Dirty Kitchen. The powerful bluegrass duo doubled its line up so tonight’s performance is sure to blow the audience away. Tickets are available here.

Friday head to the Atlas for a world premier theatrical event. shape, presented is being by force/collision the group who performed the magical Nautical Yards last spring at Yards Park. shape is the final in a 17 play series exploring genocide and reconciliation. This piece focuses on turn of the 20th century vaudeville spectacle, Black America. Expect lot of sound and movement. The troupe will take this show on the road, meaning I 95. Their next stop is the famed La Mama ETC in New York.  More information and tickets can be found here.

Saturday wear your walking shoes and eat a healthy breakfast, you’re going to be busy. Start at the Barracks Row Festival on 8th Street SE. There will be the usual military chef competition, petting zoo for the kiddos and a visit from the Redskins’ cheerleaders. Aerialists from the New York Trapeze School will be performing throughout the day. That I’d like to see. We have their brethren perform at the Atlas regularly and well, they need ceilings with ropes and rigging and the like. The DC State Fair will also be taking place at the festival with competitions happening in categories like funniest looking vegetable and best bike accessory in addition the the traditional prizes for baking.

If you didn’t get a decent snack at Barracks Row head across the Hill to Florida Avenue. Trucktoberfest is happening at Union Market. Brought to you by the folks who produced the Curbside Cookoff competitions, this event will bring together 40 food trucks, beer, music and “activities.”

If you prefer healthy fare with fewer dead animals then Yards Park will be the place for you.  Compassion Over Killing and the Vegetarian Society of DC have brought the annual Veg Fest to our neighborhood.  The event will feature meatless treats along with speakers and vendors.  Despite being a vegetarian for over 20 years I’ve never attended this event but I may have to check it out and see what the latest trends are in pleather.  You guys, even Mayor Gray wants you to eat less meat.

Sunday afternoon at 2pm head over to the Hill Center for a recital by the Navy Band Chamber Players. The group is made up of  musicians from the Concert Band, Sea Chanters, Commodores, Country Current, and Cruisers who enjoy the opportunity to play in a small company in more intimate settings. The event is free but reserve your space here.
