On Saturday, August 25th, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., volunteers throughout the city will descend on various DC Public Schools sites to participate in DCPS’s annual Beautification Day.  DCPS hopes to have over 3,500 volunteers scattered throughout every neighborhood in the city, working to make sure that every school in DC is ready for the first day of school.  Due to the overwhelming response DCPS has received so far, they recently extended the registration deadline to Wednesday the 22nd.

One organization that has provided a large amount of volunteer support for Beautification Day (and throughout the year) is DC Public Education Fund.  The Education Fund is an independent non-profit aimed at building philanthropy in support of reforming DC public schools.  Since its founding in 2007, the Fund has secured over $95 million in commitments to date to support “strategic reform initiatives in DCPS.”  The Education Fund will have staff members and supporters volunteering at schools throughout the city, but a large group of members of its Young Professionals Committee will be volunteering at Eastern Senior High School.

Although there are no more volunteer spots left at Eastern, according to the Beautification Day registration page, there are still slots available at other neighborhood schools such as Miner Elementary and Watkins Elementary, so you still have the opportunity to get out and help beautify a Capitol Hill school!  Projects vary from site to site, but could include activities from landscaping, trash pick-up, planting flowers, organizing classrooms, some light painting, and other efforts to make the schools as welcoming as possible when they open up the new school year.

So, be sure to clear your schedule for Saturday morning, head to the registration page for Beautification Day, and help your local school get ready for another year!

Update:

If you’re a soccer fan, you may want to check out Beautification Day events at Orr Elementary School (2200 Minnesota Ave, SE) or Ketcham Elementary School (1919 15th Street, SE) – D.C. United players and staff will be volunteering at both these schools on Saturday.
