To Do

Taffety Punk's Oxygen closes this weekend

Aside from mourning Chuck Brown this weekend what else are we going to do?

Tonight head over to the Hill Center for another Talk of the Hill event with Bill Press. This time he sits down with Matt Apuzzo and Eileen Sullivan of The Associated Press.  They are part of the team that won a 2012 Pulitzer Prize for Investigative Reporting for their series outlining the New York Police Department’s surveillance of minority — and particularly Muslim — neighborhoods since the 9/11 terror attacks. The event is free and begins at 7pm. Register here.

Friday is a good time to check out Taffety Punk’s Theatre Company’s latest offering Oxygen being performed at Capitol Hill Arts Workshop. This 70 minute play set in modern day Russia and centers on two lovers, male and female, both named Sasha. The small but powerful company often merges a punk aesthetic with classic texts. This performance includes a live DJ spinning tunes from the local music scene. This is the final weekend so get those tickets now.

Have a story to share about the Hill? The DC Public Library and WAMU are sponsoring an oral history project at the Southeast Library, Saturday afternoon. Record your story about the place you call home from 1-5 p.m., at  the Southeast Library. Come with family and friends, photographs and your stories! Your interview may air on WAMU 88.5’s Metro Connection, and all recordings will be archived at the Martin Luther King Jr. Library in the Washingtoniana Division for years to come. Most interviews will take around 15 minutes. Walk-ins are welcome, but if you would like to reserve a specific time slot, please call the library at 202-698-3377.
Sunday afternoon at 3pm at the Hill Center catch a screening of the BBC documentary Dinah Washington-Evil Gal Blues. The singer lived a hard life of excess and died at 39. After the screening there will be a discussion of Queen: The Life and Music of Dinah Washington  by Nadine Cohodas. The event free and you can register here.
And above all my friends this weekend spend some time just having fun and bustin’ loose in honor of the Godfather of Gogo.

Don’t forget tomorrow is Bike to Work Day! There will be pitstops in the morning (free food!) at Eastern Market and Yards Park. Looking to ride with others to find a bike-friendly route? I’m running a commuter convoy through the Hill, passing the Eastern Market pitstop around 7:30am (convoy #27). More details at: http://www.biketoworkmetrodc.org/
