To Do

Ah, Mother’s Day is upon us once again. The one day a year our society sets aside to honor the female caregivers in our lives by feeding them omelets and waffles. On the Hill we indulge their innate nosiness by offering them an opportunity to peek inside strangers houses.

There’s a lot coming up this weekend so tonight you and Fido should take it easy over at Wisdom’s Yappy Hour. You and your  pooch can sit out on Wisdom’s Patio and get a $1 off your beers all night long.

Friday head to the Atlas to check out the Great Noise Ensemble. Leaders in the genre on contemporary classical music this group is far from boring. As the ensemble’s founder Armando Bayolo has said, “Classical music doesn’t need to be the art of dead Europeans played very formally by people dressed uncomfortably.”  Exactly. The concert starts at 8 and tickets can be purchased here.

DC Shorts is back at the Atlas this weekend with a slate of risque short films paired with live burlesque by the troupe Tilted Torch. The event is called Pasties and Popcorn and also includes side show acts involving fire and dance and comedy.  There are two shows Friday night and three on Saturday night so if your mom is the off-the-wall type maybe you can take her!
Tickets are available on the DC Shorts website.

The awesomly-named band Fear of Virginia, is playing their final show at the Rock and Roll Hotel on Friday night. The fun starts at 9pm.

The Parlor Soldiers will be performing at The Corner Store at 8pm. For $10 in advance or $15 at the door you will treated to songs of heartache and heartbreak.

Saturday the Kennedy Center completes the “Look Both Ways” festival celebrating street arts with an all day celebration at Yards Park. Did you catch the stilt walkers and mimes at Eastern Market last weekend? They were a part of the city wide event. Saturday from 12pm-6pm Yards Park will be filled with jugglers, dancers and mimes. Bread and Puppet Theater known for their ginormous puppets will be there as will someone called Bert the Nerd. Who would miss this??

Of course this weekend the Capitol Hill Restorations Society’s Annual House Tour. Gawking at real estate is a second hobby for many of us here so this event is a time to rejoice.  There are thirteen homes and two gardens on the tour this year. Saturday the tour is from 4pm -7pm and Sunday it is from 12pm-5pm. Ticket are $25 if purchased by COB Friday and $30 the day of the tour.  Go here for a list of the addresses on this year’s tour and places to purchase your ticket.

Mom may also have very sophisticated taste in abstract art. If so bring her over to Conner Contemporary Gallery for the opening night reception of the Leo Villareal show. Known for his work with LED lights, custom software and imaging, this is the 5th time he has been shown at Conner. If you have yet to visit the gallery it is a must. It gives a bit of truth to the whole line about H Street being the next SoHo.

On Sunday after you have flowered and brunched her how about giving her what she really wants? A break. So take the kids over to the Fairgrounds where every Nats-free Sunday is a Family Day. With rides, games, music and ….food trucks Mom may actually want to tag along.
