The days are warming up, the end of school is drawing near, and the parents are sweating.  One question hangs in the air: “Now what am I going to do with my kids this summer?!

Capitol Hill Arts Workshop (CHAW) to the rescue!

CHAW remains a popular summer camp pick for parents in the DC-metro area who want their kiddos to experience a comprehensive array of arts at a place that’s been doing it for 40 years.  CHAW’s Cultural Adventure Camps infuse just the right mix of the visual and performing arts, giving campers experience in the various visual arts, ceramics, photography, music, movement, theater, and more.

This summer, CHAW hosts eight one-week camps from June 18 to August 10, 2012. Campers in grades K-6 will experience the arts of Japan, Alaska, Ethiopia, and Brazil in Cultural Arts Adventure Camps (9:00 am-1:00 pm). Each morning, campers will rotate through art, recreation, and music & movement classes in small groups divided by age.

Want a full-day experience?  Join us for afternoon camp options (2:00-5:30 pm) including:

  • Recreation Adventures (pool, parks, museums, local attractions & more)
  • Nature’s Lens (photography meets gardening)
  • Instrument Building (instrument construction & cigar box guitar making)
  • Eco Art (natural & recycled objects into functional art)
  • American Folk Life (folk crafts & traditions)
  • Alien Invasion (design, direct & perform a sci-fi movie)
  • Sculptures That Move (boats, cars, pinwheels, mobiles and more)
  • Printmaking Plus (experiment with images & mediums to make books)
  • Page to Stage (write, perform & direct original works)
  • West African Dance (a dance intensive camp-no experience necessary)
  • Discover Da Vinci (learn about Da Vinci’s life and recreate his work)
  • Rock & Roll Band (form a band & jam with other musicians – 2-weeks)

For students ages 13 to 17 years who want to gain valuable leadership training, CHAW offers a Counselor-in-Training program.

And parents, CHAW’s got something for you too.  Now’s the chance to take a break and expand that creativity with a class in Painting, Drawing, Ceramics, Digital Photography, Poetry, Jewelry Making, Musical Theater, Dance (Jazz, Tap, Ballet) and Fitness (Zumba, Pilates).
