To Do

Yes, yes the Caps have advanced in the playoffs and the Nats are on fire but lets face it it really doesn’t affect your day to day existence does it? How about cocktails and performance art and fortune telling?

Lots of fun things to do this weekend so why let’s get right to it shall we?

Tonight through Sunday the interdisciplinary arts troupe force/collision is debuting a piece entitled The Nautical Yards which features new music by composer Daniel Paul Lawson (2012 New Music USA grantee), 7 live musicians including 2 opera singers, as well 5 dancers and 15 actors, this world premiere will take place in and around the water of the Washington Yards Park canal.

This is a site-specific piece, created for the space and inspired by the rich history and architecture of the Washington Navy Yard,The Nautical Yards chronicles the story of two lovers separated by war and the sea. Drawing on documented accounts of the Navy Yard civilian work force, personal war correspondence and letters and the mythology of water, the performance will make references to the myth of Hero and Leander, West African folklore and the dances of German choreographer Pina Bausch, to name a few.

Premium seats are $30 and or you can stand for free. Either way, you can purchase them here. The performance begins at 7 and will end about once hour after sunset.

It sucks not knowing what the future holds doesn’t it? I mean don’t you just want stop the guessing and learn RIGHT NOW. So you can be prepared. Perhaps you would like to learn your fortune while enjoying a well-made cocktail? Wisdom is always thinking about you and your needs. Friday from 6-10 and Saturday from 4-9 Erik’s Colombian Aunt will be reading fortunes and the national liqueur Aquadente will be making an appearance in special cocktails.

But go home early Friday night you’ll need your rest because Saturday is crazy busy and you don’t want to miss a thing.

It’s going to be tough but with careful planning you could attend all three awesome events.

First is Taste of 8th. From 1pm -4pm almost 20 Barracks Row restaurants will be participating and offering up tastes of their signature fare. Tickets are $5 for a tasting or $20 for 5. A list of participating restaurants can be found here.

For more foodie fun head to the Atlas for the very first ever Hop Chef event sponsored by Ommegang Brewery. The New York State Brewery specializes i Belgian style beers and H Street’s own Teddy Folkman has been working with them. So the brewery is hosting their first Hop Chef on H. Hop Chef which does not at all resemble another famous cooking competition, features local celeb chefs, inlcuding Boundary Road’s Bradley Walker and Sonoma’s Mike Bonk. They must Ommegang products in dishes paired with Ommegang brews.  You get to sample. Tickets to the event, which runs from 1-4pm, are $75 and can be purchased here.

And then cap off this day over at the Kingman Island Bluegrass festival. The event goes from 1-8 and is free, although they do suggest a $5 donation to Living Classrooms, an amazing organization that works to get kids interacting nature. Food and drinks will be available to purchase. There will be live bluegrass music and free canoe rides on the Anacostia and it must just make you think that maybe you have left the big city and you’re sitting on a hill in the Blue Ridge. Sigh.
