Planning for Valentine's Day on the Hill

Love it or loathe it, Valentine’s Day is in exactly one week. And Capitol Hill has no shortage of options to woo your (potential) sweetheart.

To guarantee availability, place your order now for flowers, although the shops will certainly be well stocked for walk-ins. Tired of roses? Tulips are one of the top Valentine’s picks at Blue Iris. Although Freedom Roses dominate the sales at Surroundings, hydrangeas and lilies are popular alternatives.

If you and your sweetheart long for a cozy meal out, draw the curtains around your table at Bistro Cacao, and nestle into a hidey-hole of love. Popular for weeknight carryout, Bistro Italiano steps it up a notch—as evidenced by their taking reservations–to celebrate St. Valentine. Their foggy windows, votive candles, and flower-adorned tables seduce even the most ardent take-out fans. A front table at Park Café proffers views of a peaceful and beautiful Lincoln Park, long after the dogs and kids have gone home for the day. Swing by Sonoma, or Pound’s new wine bar, for pre-or-post dinner drinks. And if you’re homebound with your honey, don’t despair! Pick up some Valentine’s macarons from The Sweet Lobby and crack open a nice bottle of wine from Schneider’s. Armand’s even delivers heart-shaped pizzas.

How do you plan to celebrate Valentine’s Day on the Hill?

  1. I tried making reservations at Bistro Cacao last week and they’re already booked. Unless you’re willing to have dinner before 5pm or at 10pm (and those times might be gone by now as well) you’ll have to cross that off your list of ideas.
