Things We Take for Granted: The Hill is Home

As we chill the champagne, it’s only natural to ponder the triumphs of the past year and the hopes for 2012.

Who can believe it’s really 2012? Me, for one. As a newbie and a renter in 1994, and then a home-owner and dog-owner to now a parent, I’ve thoroughly enjoyed living in Capitol Hill. I moved here in 1994, on a shoestring GS-5 budget, into a ridiculously cheap efficiency apartment upon recommendation from a cousin who’d been a Lincoln Park resident since the ’80s. First among my stops were the Hawk & Dove, the Tune Inn, Burrito Brothers, the cheese monger at Eastern Market, and St. Mark’s Church. Little of that has changed, except, of course, my visits to the history-laden Hawk & Dove.

But I digress. Back then, the Hill Rag was my bible. I learned about local civic activism, local events and local businesses. As time went on, I picked the publication up less and less. The City Paper was more applicable to my 20-something life. Time passed. Jobs passed. Technology evolved. And here we are, well into the digital age, iPads and Androids in hand: our information age needs to be satisfied in entirely new ways. And for those of us living here, the Hill is Home has filled a need to have current, relevant and helpful news on Capitol Hill.

Personally, there’s little else I find more satisfying than the comments from friends and strangers about this blog. Though I’m challenged to find time to post frequently, my association with THIH writers and editors is among the most important in my life. But speaking as a Hill resident, there’s no better place to turn for a full picture of life here. THIH has evolved significantly since launching in the spring of 2009, and as thousands of volunteer hours has kept it afloat, it’s worth a toast and round of applause.

Ok: that’s my quota of TWTFG navel-gazing.
