The To Do List

The Tune Inn as a Holiday Wonderland

Some would argue that the Tune Inn is a place of worship. Photo by María Helena Carey.

You’ve checked off your gift-giving list; you’ve trimmed everything that ever needed trimming. You baked cookies; you ate your body weight in cookie dough. You’ve cooked and cleaned and fa-la-la-ed until the cows came home. Now the Chrismukkah/Festivus season has literally descended upon you as gracefully as an overweight man in a velvet tracksuit does down one of these rickety, masonry-challenged Capitol Hill flues. So what is there to do this weekend?

Well… how about taking a walk? We’re having the oddest and most pleasant unseasonably warm weather, so maybe you should take a nice stroll. Jon talked earlier about the crazy spirited folks down on 15th and D, SE. I am here to tell you that the 300 block of Maryland Avenue has some crazy awesome spirit, too! Independence Avenue, from 3rd all the way to 14th, has mad amounts of spirit and some gorgeous Christmas trees on display! Go find some hidden treasures and report back to us: we definitely want to know if you find a Pastafarian display in our neighborhood, for instance!

One of those inspired strolls could end up at the United States Botanic Garden, where the Season’s Greetings exhibit featuring the awesomest little trains ever, is on display through January 2nd, from 10 am until 5 pm. If you can’t get enough of trains, head north to Union Station. Make sure that after ooohing and aaahing when you see the three enormous LED-lit Christmas wreaths at the entrance, you head straight to the main hall and coo and squee over their model trains and tiny villages assembled just for your viewing pleasure at the Holiday Train Show, also up through January 2rd.

Make sure you take in the beauty of this year’s Capitol Christmas Tree: this year the tree is a Sierra White Fir, shipped with love and sparkly sun-kissed sand wishes from California, and the tree’s theme is, “California Shines”– it features decorations made by real, live Californians.

(Actual Californians– wow, right?)
