The To Do List

The days are indeed getting shorter, the neighborhood squirrels are mad with nut harvesting and there are leaves all over my yard. But damn, these temperatures just aren’t taking the hint. The weekend doesn’t look like it’s going to cool off too much, but as promised, the list of weekend events keeps growing as the month wears on.

Top on my list of what I would do if I had a young ‘uns of the appropriate age: “Shake Up Your Saturdays: The King James Bible” at the Folger Shakespeare Library. Now that’s a eye catching pr pitch if I ever saw one! But really, with its treasure chest of antiquities, the Folger boasts a fantastic collection and this special free program kicks off their new exhibit Manifold Greatness: The Creation and Afterlife of the King James Bible. Young readers from 6-12 will be introduced to the most famous book in the world, the translation process and how this rare book affects us today.  There are also free tours of the Elizabethan Gardens at 10 and 11 a.m.

But back to planning the weekend…in a more organized manner.

On Thursday Caleb Hawley with Rudder North and Jason Liebman will perform at Ebenezer’s Coffeehouse from 7:30-10 p.m. ($8). Singer songwriter Hawley has played with the likes of Mark Cohn, Rusted Root, Dave Matthews Band, Shawn Mullins, and Edwin McCain.

To get your Friday cocktail fix with some of our neighbor’s most colorful characters, make a reservation for the Happy Travels Diplomats Tour At Congressional Cemetery on Friday from 6 – 8 pm.  Hear about the trials of “residents” who served as diplomats as they faced pirates, traveling into social revolutions, and fighting duels. There will be plenty of time for guests to make negotiations of their own, over drinks and food from countries around the globe. Free admission. Alcohol will be served at the event, so only those 21 years of age and older will be admitted. Email RSVP@congressionalcemetery.org or call 202-543-0539 for reservations.

Friday night you can hear saxophonists Lee Konitz and Brad Linde at the Atlas at 8 p.m.  ($25) accompanied by piano, bass and drums. Charlie Parker, eat your heart out!

On Saturday stop by CHAW from 5-7 p.m. for a free ARTDays happy hour event to create bowls for the Empty Bowls Project benefiting homelessness and hunger relief organizations. Come prepared to get a little messy (aprons are available) and learn how to make hand-made bowls using coils, press molds, and slabs. For those more experienced throwing wheels will be available. Instruction provided. Best for ages 8 & up.  Children must be accompanied by an adult.  Stick around and check out the new juried exhibit It’s Personal.

SOVA has live music ($5) on Saturday, with Silo Halo, Hot Cha Cha, Summer People, Screen Vinyl Image rocking the wine bar starting at 8 p.m.

Meet DC-based artist artist Ben Tolman at an artist talk on Sunday from 2-4 p.m. at The Fridge. Tolman’s new exhibit of revealing ink drawings was selected as the The Washington Post’s “Gallery Opening of the Week.” Tolman and Alex Goldstein, The Fridge’s gallery director, will guide visitors on a tour through the artist’s process of creating his large scale pieces, by taking a look at his over 200 smaller works, which include doodles, large- and mid-sized drawings, and paintings on found objects. The artist will also show a video of a new mural project he began recently on an local abandoned power plant.
