The To Do List

The weather forecast for the weekend looks grim — that is, if we all don’t wash away by Friday. After a few wet days wherein my feet begin to turn to webs, I think it’s best to plug ahead, make grand plans inside and out for the weekend and pray these tropical storms just get over themselves. This weekend offers the best of arts on Capitol Hill so there’s no use letting Lee, Maria or Nate spoil the fun.

I’m headed to the final summer concert at Yards Park on Friday night. This series has become a household staple and promise of pop and rock by Divide by Zero! and food truck treats by Carnivore BBQ, DC Slices, Porc, Devine Foods and Sweetz Cheesecake makes this an easy decision. For more finger-lickin’ and a dose of patriotism, try the Great Heartland Cookout on Saturday. Tickets range from $40-100 and the event benefits the Fisher House Foundation, a private-public partnership that supports America’s military and their families in their time of need.

For more live music on Friday, stop by the Corner Store where Joy Ike, showcased on NPR’s All Things Considered, will perform with Steph Modder and Amanda Lee at 8 .m. Tickets are $10.

Starting Friday at 7:30 p.m. and running through October 1, CHAW hosts Taffety Punk’s Riot Grrrls as they take on the Bard’s Much Ado About Nothing. This is the grrrls first foray into Shakespeare’s comedies and, predictably, they stick to their mission and outdo the boys at every turn. Tickets are $10.

On Saturday morning from 9:30 to12:30 CHAW presents a free drop-in Eco Art Community Garden Workshop, part of the series of ARTDays workshops sponsored by Fitness Together – Capitol Hill. Participants will create a garden out of recycled materials and learn about Rett Syndrome in the process. The garden will be featured at the Girl Power 2 Cure* gala later in the month. Artwork from the garden will be sent to children affected by this syndrome.

For a taste of the chardonnay-sipping art scene on the Hill head to CHAW and the Fridge on Saturday evening when both open their doors with new exhibits. The Capitol Hill Art League (CHAL) opens its first juried all-media exhibit of the season, It’s Personal, from 5- 7 p.m. Admission to the opening and exhibit is free. The Fridge launches the fall season with all new work by DC-based artist Ben Tolman in an exhibit featuring ink drawings revealing the whole range of the artist’s process from doodles on napkins to obsessively crafted works. The opening, from 7-11 p.m., will feature a special performance from indie-alt band Bellflur.

Whatever you do, don’t miss the H Street Chalk Walk on Saturday. Come early or late, dine, vote or simply stare; you’ve never seen such marvelous things underfoot.

Also, H Street Bakes, featuring awesome boozy treats from the Crunk Cake ladies (among others) will be at the Pug from 11-3 tomorrow – pick some up treats before the Chalk Walk! (which is still ON, btw)
