Feast for Good

How eclectic is the stack of books on your bedside table? Maybe it’s all American classics, or National Book award nominees? Since your copy of the new Cleopatra biography is well thumbed, you might even admit to Tina Fey’s Bossypants. Well, consider yourself ready to attend the Capitol Hill Community Foundation’s A Literary Feast on October 22.  Reading is certainly not required for this annual fundraiser, but being in the know will certainly help you pick which dinner party you’ll be inviting yourself to. Buy your tickets by October 7.

Each year gracious Hill residents pair up with the Foundation and open up their homes and tables to guests who’ve signed on for a night of conviviality and community, and perhaps a bit of book chat. Each host picks a theme and a relative menu; I have heard of some wonderful spreads over the years. Guests have been known to get quite gussied up and don berets, sharkskin, kimonos and plenty of sequins. This year 34 chefs have signed on, and the menus features dishes such as New England clam chowder, braised duck, Tuscan and Sicilian pasts, Southwest ribs, Dutch and Turkish repasts, and a selection of honey.  Yes, honey…do find your beekeeping hat straight away. Check out the list of books and tempting tables here.

The $75 tickets include an invitation to a post-dinner party at the Hill Center for dessert and live music.

Proceeds from the evening goes towards the Foundation’s grant programs for local schools. Since 1989 the Foundation has raised over $6.2 million, which has gone back directly into the community to fund school-based and after-school enrichment programs, streetscape beautification, arts education, sports for children and many other worthy efforts.
