As the 10th anniversary of  September 11th approaches, there are numerous commemorative events being held around the city, including on the Hill. On Thursday, a Congressional Staff Candlelight Vigil will be held at the east front of the Capitol from 6:30-7:30pm. Sunday is being billed as a day of national service, and there are many volunteer organizations that could use your help. You can find out more information, including organizations close to your neighborhood, here.

Churches and fire stations all over the city will observe a moment of reflection by ringing bells and sounding sirens for one minute at 1:00pm on September 11th. Saint Peter’s Catholic Church will hold a “Mass for Peace and Justice” Sunday at 5:00pm, to be celebrated by the Archbishop of Washington, Donald Cardinal Wuerl.

The Redskins will face off against the Giants in the regular season opener this Sunday at 4:15pm. The NFL says players and coaches will wear 9/11 ribbons, and former U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell will serve as Redskins’ honorary captain for the coin toss. And since you’re going to be watching the game anyway, you might as well head to 8th Street SE, where several Barracks Row restaurants including Senart’s, Lola’s and Molly Malone’s will be donating 50% of sales during the game to various organizations benefiting September 11th victims.

If you venture off the hill, many other events will be happening at the Pentagon and at museums across DC, including the 9/11 5K race, which kicks off in Arlington, VA at 6pm on Saturday.
