The Hill is Rocking!

Guest post series by Kevin Hill and ChunkyGlasses.com

Annnnd we’re back! Sorry about the absence folks, but we were a weee bit busy getting out and about in this great town the past few weeks. You do know that life exists outside Capitol Hill right? Or does it? I don’t know, but either way we’re glad to be here to guide you to what is hopefully some damn fine rock (or something) this weekend.

The Red Palace will be doing it’s usual-from-time-to–time thing of having burlesque or something like it on Friday and Saturday, but like we’ve discussed before, that’s sort of essence de rock, so maybe that will do you just fine. Otherwise, your best bet for the weekend is going to be the Rock and Roll Hotel.

First up on Friday there’s  a triple bill of, and there’s no other way to put this, some weird ass rock. Swirlies headline with Psychedlic Horses@#$ (I did not make that up) and Wild Fruit (DC ROCK!!) sitting in for the opening band duties. I can’t say as I’m really familiar with any of these, but a quick check on their respective websites (click the links above) tells me that this might be a VERY interesting show. So if you’ve got an open mind, are into loud, weird garage-y rock, or maybe just interested in day glo horse poo, then this might be the show for you.

For the less adventurous, there’s Hayes Carll on Saturday night. Described as “Fiery rock, twangy country, pensive folk and even a touch of gospel.” Feel like throwing back some beers and doing some honky-tonkin’ Saturday night? This might just be the show for you. Hey, at least you’ll probably see some pretty bitchin’ cowboy hats, right?

Like I was saying before, The Red Palace is up to some freaky shenanigans this weekend proper, but if you can hang in there till Sunday then they’ve got something really, really special in store for you. William Elliot Whitmore will be performing at The Palace Sunday night, and strangely there are still tickets available. Best described as revisionist awesome, Whitmore carries on in the tradition of the dirt weary, depression era farmer…except he’s not one. He’s just a dude from Iowa. If you haven’t heard this remarkable performer before, head on over to his site NOW and check him out. If you have, well then you’ve bought your ticket already.

And that about wraps it up for the week. If you still haven’t had enough, then why not check out our review of EMA at The Red Palace last Sunday and then ask yourself, “Why wasn’t I there?” Actually…that would be my fault. I left you hanging. I deserted the Hilldwellers. It will never happen again. I promise. Maybe.

Now here’s this weeks record recommendation:

Raphael Saadiq – Stone Rollin’ – A funky, sexy, outrageous bomb of awesome that somehow slipped under my radar, but after one listen it shot to the #2 spot on my best of year list. I could say a lot about this album, but it’s better if you just trust me. You need this record. Have Rdio or Spotify? You’re in luck. Just click HERE or HERE. The rest of you, get thee to a record store already, OK. Wait. There are no record stores on the Hill. Hmmm….maybe someone should do something about that.

Until next week…keep your earholes full people!
