Monday Morning Circle Time

People I am so sorry but I just can’t stop myself. The quite-literally hellish weather has been the main topic of conversation and I fear the heat wave will continue to torment us for days to come. It makes us all miserable, sweaty conversationalists who can do nothing but complain and whine. It was the main news story of the past week, since we all had given up caring about the debt ceiling and preferred to read about journalists using their cars as ovens. The sad news from Norway and London over the weekend distracted us from our own suffering for a brief moment.

Humans were rather scarce out on the streets this weekend although as evening came I noticed that some began to venture out to seek nourishment and refreshment from somewhere else since cooking in one’s own home on days like these is too forbidding a concept.

How did you attempt to beat the heat this weekend?

Jon: I spent Friday evening taking my nephew for his birthday present of a flying trapeze lesson at TSNY DC, followed by dinner from the food trucks at the Yards Park.  Saturday was spent mostly doing errands and trying to stay cool, and ended with an evening movie with the family. Sunday was spent catching up on laundry and concluded with a nice dinner at home with friends.

Kyra: My family and I spent Friday evening at the Capitol Skyline Pool, which was worth every penny spent on membership in this past week alone. On Saturday that same family spent the early afternoon at the Building Museum. Thanks to our AC and an afternoon nap, we were actually able to enjoy a post sunset run on Saturday night, which was considerably cooler than this evening’s run. On Sunday we shopped for fabric in Old Town, grabbed a bite to eat along King Street and then headed home to paint the dining room and guest bathroom. At this point I am painting just to paint.

Maria: After having to deal with pre-op for the little guy’s upcoming surgery, Maria tried in vain to visualize not sweating like a pig. She also grabbed a nice, low-key dinner at the Argonaut.  On Saturday, Maria opened up more boxes; took a field trip to Frager’s for fix-up stuff; opened up more boxes; had a cocktail from Senart’s; and finished the night at an impromptu backyard party at a friend’s house.  Sunday found her trying desperately to organize former box contents, and then reaching for the suburbs to get contained and organized.  A trip to the pool rounded out the weekend.

Lauren: Because we’re completely insane, we went ahead with our weekend plan to dig up the backyard and install a new patio. At night we rewarded our gracious friends who fried like bacon strips alongside us with drinks and dinner. One more weekend of work and we’ll be ready to sit in the heat rather than work in it.

Jen: Friday night we took advantage of our last kid-free evening and saw Midnight in Paris which was cute but no Hannah and Her Sisters. Saturday I cooled off during a Bikram class and then quietly readied for my husband’s surprise birthday party that evening. He began to suspect something when it took me nearly two hours to buy trash bags. We took him to dinner at Sticky Rice and then he was feted by a bunch of friends gathered at the Pug. Sunday was spent lying in the shade at Cheverly Pool and musing about when I can get back to Mexico…
