Things We Take for Granted: Ted's Shakes

Over the weekend, a conversation with friends about the impending heat lead to a conversation about ice cream, during which several friends remarked they had all been to Ted’s Bulletin (with me!) for milkshakes. It turns out the shakes at Ted’s are something I take for granted, especially as the temperature continues to rise. After all, it wasn’t so long ago that Ted’s came to Barracks Row, and I can’t remember having a decent milkshake on the Hill prior to that.

As any New England native worth their salt knows, there are distinct differences between a frappe and a milkshake (a frappe contains ice cream while a milkshake is milk and flavored syrup blended together.) Alas, no one south of the Connecticut border seems to have heard of the distinction, so I’ll begrudgingly use the term “shake” for this post.

While I’ll always welcome the addition of an authentic “we make our own ice cream right here on the premises” shop, Ted’s does a pretty good job when it comes to creating delectable shakes. They aren’t too thick or too thin, in fact as Goldilocks might say, they’re just right. And at a $5.99 each, the price is reasonable, especially when compared to other ice cream places nearby.

Ted’s shakes are definitely big enough to share, but if you go alone, you’ll find you somehow managed to drink the entire thing. The line is often long, but you can take your shake to go.

There are devout followers of Good Stuff and I know many H Street devotees who love Rita’s but I think when it comes to shakes, Ted’s just can’t be beat.

How can we be taking Ted’s for granted? It’s only been open a year. Next column, “Why Don’t People Hang Out at Senart’s Like They Used To?” I anxiously await your column about taking Hello Cupcake for granted.

Ted’s is so overrated. Their shakes are watery. And if you get one take away, you wait in line for 15 minutes before anyone even acknowledges your presence.

I’m thinking you, dear readers, are in need of a milkshake or a hug, whatever comes first.

I am one of the people who slightly prefers Good Stuff, but I love Ted’s as well and I agree that we take it for granted (or at least I do). Whenever friends from different areas of town dine at Ted’s with me, they are shocked when I don’t get a shake. I guess I don’t usually get them when I’m eating too because it would be too much food for me and I can get one any time. My friends from across town stuff themselves and finish their shakes because it’s a rarer thing for them!

I had no idea there was such a thing as a frappe/shake differentiation.

They don’t make any lactose-free shakes, do they?

Yes, there have been good shakes on the Hill pre-Ted’s and even Good Stuff. I drank my way through three pregnancies with Cindy’s chocolate banana shakes at Jimmy T’s starting way back in 1996. I have since tried both Good Stuff and Ted’s and, sadly, have found both to be inconsistent in quality. I would love a reliable thick shake, not one I can hope is going to not be too sweet and watery, that I then have to throw in the trash on my way home. Which is what has happened the last two times I’ve been to GS and Ted’s. To me, inconsistency in our restaurant offerings (food starts out great, then goes downhill fast) is the most annoying problem we have here on the Hill.

Also, I think the purpose of this column is simply to highlight things we are really lucky to have on the Hill, and Ted’s certainly fits into that category. Even if you think the food is nothing special (I would be inclined to agree) the decor is. It makes me happy that so many restuarateurs have chosen our neighborhood to open new eateries.
