The Village Gallery to Close

“After 14 years on Capitol Hill, The Village Gallery will be closing at the end of July,” said Claire Southerlin, who owns the shop with her husband, Alan Braley.

Southerlin and Braley are currently looking for buyers for both the property and the remaining art collection, which is currently made up mainly of Braley’s watercolor, acrylic and other pieces. They started the shop as a gift and women’s boutique and gallery, and gradually transitioned to being primarily a gallery, she said.  Southerlin, who was a DCPS teacher before opening the gallery, said she and Braley don’t have specific plans beyond work on their Capitol Hill home, but “after 14 years, we’ve decided we want to do something else.”

Hill admirers of Braley’s art can stop in to support the business one last time – or speculate what the property could become in the future.

For her part, Southerlin said she’s not sure what she’d like to see in the space, which is zoned for commercial use, beyond “hopefully something that will work really well for the community.  We thank everyone for their past patronage, but its time for someone else to take their shot,” Southerlin said.

The Village on Capitol Hill is located at 705 North Carolina Ave. SE, near Port City Java right off of Eastern Market.  The gallery phone number is 202-546-3040 and hours are Wednesday through Saturday, 11 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.; Sunday, noon – 4 p.m.  They are closed Mondays and Tuesdays.  For more information, visit their website.

Anyone know what’s happening with this? I’ve seen people doing work inside and it has a new color scheme now.
