Options PCS Graduates First Senior Class

On Tuesday at the Atlas Performing Arts Center, a group of students made history for their school.  The senior class donned their caps and gowns to receive the first diplomas awarded by Options Public Charter School.  Mayor Gray marked the occasion as keynote speaker, joined by Board of Trustees President (and Vice President of WUSA-9), Dr. J.C. Hayward.

Twenty-four students walked the stage, a 100% graduation rate.  Additionally, all of the students have their post-graduation plans in place, either moving on to college, community college, the armed services (Options has the city’s only JROTC program) or employment.

The first public charter school in the city, Options was created as a highly supportive and specialized environment for students in danger of dropping out of school because they are underachieving, truant, have behavior problems, or have exceptionalities requiring therapeutic special education services.  Opened as a middle school in 1996, Options originally shared its campus at 1375 E Street, NE, with Sasha Bruce Public Charter School but eventually took over the entire building when Sasha Bruce closed.  Four years ago the school expanded to include 9th-12th grades.  Last month, the school successfully completed its 15 year review with the Public School Charter Board.

Today the school offers a number of classes and opportunities tailored to the needs of its students, maintaining a high standard of academic achievement and character for its scholars.

As Commissioner for ANC 6A05, Sharee Lawler serves as a community representative on the Board of Trustees of Options Public Charter School.

Options has the city only JROTC, huh? In what way? Because I know for a fact that Eastern, Woodson and Dunbar have JROTC programs.
