Monday Morning Circle Time

Hello summer! Oh it’s the real thing. Fireflies and cook outs and fuzzy bedtimes and No  More School. Every year at this time I question my decision not to become a teacher. I fantasize about a “real summer”  where the kids and I could hang out and relax  instead of having to send them  to pricey camps which also  means no let up in the grueling daily packing of the lunches.

But no school means no homework so the weekends are definitely more relaxed than before.

What did you do this weekend?

Sharee:  We gathered up some delicious ingredients for grilling from Eastern Market and transported that piece of Capitol Hill with us to the Eastern Shore for the weekend.  A Sunday business meeting at the Mi Vecindad bar resulted in discovering what is now my most favorite version of a michelada.

Jon: Started the weekend a bit early on Friday with our company picnic out in The Plains, Virginia, followed by a wine & cheese party near U Street NW at a friend’s house.  Saturday included breakfast at the Capital City Diner (that’s one mean western omelet), and a last-minute haircut and hot lather shave at Michael Craig.  Saturday evening found us catching up on Netflix. Sunday was relaxing, with some regular weekly errands and a Father’s Day gift of a massage at the Spa on the Hill.  I now feel pampered, like a delicate flower.

Nichole: I started my weekend on Friday with a tour of the Anacostia River with the fine folks at the Anacostia Watershed Society where I learned about how the river has gotten so polluted, saw the potential for it to be another great asset to our neighborhood and learned about the ways that AWS is working to clean it up. On Saturday, I took the new pup and his sister Ramona for his first trip to Metro Mutts and then I headed down to Maine Avenue to pick up several pounds of Carolina shrimp that I took home and boiled for an evening with the girls on my patio. I also stopped into the Sweet Lobby to pick up some sweet treats and although I was expecting to love the pistachio macaron the best, the rose is definitely my favorite! Sunday was kind of lazy, except for yoga and a trip to the Takoma Park food coop.

Jen: Friday was spent making sure the celiac child had food options at both a school potluck and an evening pizza party. My attempt at cake pops was a disaster but I just called them cake balls, covered them and chocolate and sprinkles and they were a hit. We attended the AAA Championship Little League Game, our Red Sox lost a great game to the Senators. Saturday was spent mostly on chores and grocery shopping followed by an evening Bikram class. Father’s Day we went to the Nats game with fellow Little League families and stayed to let the kids run the bases. The 8 year old wore his Zimmerman jersey in the hopes the slugger would sign it but alas he did not.
