Nothing says summer is around the corner like a nice cold beer, make than a nice, cold, American brewed beer.  Tonight marks the kick off of American Craft Beer Week at Smith Commons on H Street.

The motto is “no fermentation without representation” and the week will offer a variety of American craft beers at $5 each. “Paired beer bites” and beer guides will also be featured.

Tonight is a “Toast to the Neighborhood” from 6-9p. The brewer is Oskar Blues, the food will be $1 oysters. Beer guide will be Jens Piferoen of Hop and Wine. Residents from 20002 and 20003 zip codes with proof of address are invited to enjoy 3rd floor exclusive access with complimentary bar snacks from 6-7pm with pint purchase.

Tuesday is “Tale of a Two Hearted City” featuring Bell’s Brewery. Beers will be $5 each for DC beer drinkers. The beer guide will again be Jens Piferoen of Hop and Wine. Stop in to try one of Bell’s most popular brews, the “Two Hearted Ale,” a Smith Commons staple.

Wednesday night’s “Swell Groomed” will have beer by Dogfish Head, with beer guides Ben Brown and Josh Fruchtman and a paired beer bite of meringue of orange/foie gras surprise and braised pork belly w/bacon juice.

DC Brau will take center stage during Thursday’s “No Taxation without Fermentation” night. Beers will include the Public Ale and the Penn Quarter Porter – there are rumors of a special untapped brew! – you’ll have to show up to find out. Brewmasters Brandon Skall and Jeff Hancock will be there, and the paired beer bite will be a tomato mozzarella salad.

Friday brings Great Lakes Brewing Company and “Sustainably Hopped, Living Green.” Distributor Jens Piferoen and sales rep Bernie Van Order will be present to answer all the questions you’ve always about beer but never knew who to ask. Information about eating and drinking “green” will also be provided.

The week rounds out Saturday with the Brightest Young Things and a brunch with Flying Dog brewery. “Beermosas” will be available at 11am. A trifecta of beer guides, Ben Brown, Tom Hunter and J.T. Smith will be on hand, and a Cuban Yuzu sandwich will be offered at the bar for $5. Reservations required for the brunch.
