Reader Poll: Will You be Furloughed?

Often times when I tell people I live on the Hill, their very next question is if I work on Capitol Hill…as in that big domed building that gives our neighborhood its name.  And I always respond that the neighborhood is so much more than that, and most of my friends’ jobs have little to do with politics.  This town is more than just politics, no matter what the rest of the country thinks!  But as a possible government shutdown looms, I am wondering how right I am in telling folks that no, we do not all work in politics.  If the government shuts down, my private-sector office will certainly still be open next week.  How about you?

I’m a contractor, so since we’ve already been funded (not sure how far ahead, but funded), we just continue on. Our government overlords might be harder to contact, but otherwise, life will continue on as normal for us.

As a Hill resident, who does not work “on the Hill”, I too always get that question. But, in defense of said questioners, it’s a pretty logical question. I agree that D.C. is about more than politics, but we will all see how important politics is to our neighborhood if and when the governement shutters!

It’s also important to remember that the federal government consists of a lot more than “the Hill.” I live on the Hill and work for the government, but I’m an attorney at a federal administrative agency. And yes, I’m apparently about to get an unscheduled, unpaid vacation.
