Reader Poll: Tree Boxes

April showers bring May flowers, or so we learned in nursery school.  What I’ve learned since having my own yard to tend to is that April showers bring a massive invasion of weeds that can grow as tall as me in the blink of an eye.  And in front of each of our houses, at the edge of the sidewalk, is a lovely box of dirt that, while on city property, is the homeowner’s responsibility to care for.  Meaning you need to tame those unruly weeds.  So do you do it? Or do you hire a gardener, or maybe pay the neighbor’s kid a few bucks? Or are you lucky enough to have a neighbor with a passion for gardening who was happy to add your tree box onto his or her green thumb portfolio?

no need to weed — neighborhood dogs take care of most vegetation by consistently relieving themselves in it. Most of my attention is spent clearing the garbage dumped by piggish pedestrians.

I requested a Tree Box using the city’s 311 line about 8 months ago. I really hope to get one soon! My block of 4th St doesn’t have many big trees (I heard they were all cut down to fight the drugs a while back?). So, now the sidewalks are a little rough – and the boxes that do exist are rarely kept up (I think a few of them belong to vacant homes). We look forward to making ours stand out and setting the example for neighbors!
