Hine Development Questions? Restoration Society Hosts Eastbank Tonight

Uploaded to Flickr by Will Scullin

It’s difficult not to have knee jerk reactions to change. Especially big change, and when Hine Junior High at Eastern Market is torn down, the building that’s going up will indeed be big. It’s the source of much anxiety and concern for some residents, a much anticipated boost in the arm for commerce and density for other neighbors, and opportunity to add interesting architectural elements to the area for others. The major concern is the massiveness of the buildings, both in height and bulk.

You can see the current proposal here. The developers Stanton Eastbank have presented schematic design presentations at ANC 6B meetings at the February and March meetings, and revised designs are expected tonight. (You can read all of our past coverage on this here)

The Capitol Hill Restoration Society will host a special membership meeting tonight at 6:30 pm at Maury Elementary, located at 1250 Constitution Avenue NE. It’s a historic preservation review process meeting and is open to the public. The Society details their role in the review process on their website.

I’m sorry but after looking at all the beautiful photos of Victorian houses I fail to see anything “Victorian” or victorian inspired in the proposed drawings. To my untrained eye I just saw a bunch of linear looking buildings appearing more similar in design to Hine Jr. High than any of the beautiful victorian architecture found throughout Capitol Hill.
