Run For Your Life: HCC's Dead Man's Run

Springtime is just around the corner, and your excuses for having neglected your running sneakers all winter are wearing thin. So why not get motivated for the warm weather by gearing up for a nice and easy 5k run? The name of this race alone makes it sound fun! Historic Congressional Cemetery’s “Dead Man’s Run” will take place on Sunday, May 8th at 8am. More details (and plenty of ‘life after death’ puns) courtesy of Patrick Crowley of Congressional Cemetery’s Board of Directors below.

Move them bones…

“Well, yes, we’re dead serious: Congressional Cemetery is having a 5K run on May 8, 2011.  It’s the Dead Man’s Run for those who think they can outrun the Grim Reaper. Good luck with that. The Run starts with the Tolling Bell at 8:00 AM; race packets will be available starting at 6:30 AM (quiet please, we don’t want to wake the dead). Gather inside the Main Gate at the intersection of 18th & E & Potomac Ave. SE.  To get there take the Orange/Blue Line Metro to the Stadium Armory Station, exit on the Armory side and head south 1 block to Potomac Ave, turn right and it’s one block to the main gate. If you’re driving, there’s a public parking lot at Massachusetts Ave & 19th Street, SE (approach from Mass Ave and cross 19th directly into the lot area. 19th is one-way heading north). Same walking instructions from there.”

About the course…

“The course is fairly flatline, starting out in the graveyard, ‘crossing over’ the east end to a loop along the RFK Access Road, then back to the graveyard for the finish line.  If you haven’t seen our grounds in a while, you’ll be shocked to find a brand new roadway made of hand-laid concrete pavers.  And no pot holes! – disappointing as that may be for those who seek an adventurous run.”  Register online.

What will I win?

“We thought about cash prizes, but they say you can’t take it with you, so why bother!?  We will have some pretty cool shirts however, and for those among the quick at the finish line, we have the very exclusive Dead Man’s Run caps.  So, come join us on May 8th, we’ll put in a good word for you.”

I for one, am in! If you’re a Congressional Cemetery member or a Congressional staffer, you’re eligible for a reduced registration rate of $15. The regular registration fee is $20 before April 30th. For information about becoming a sponsor or volunteering at the run, send us an email.
