Weekend East City Event Round Up: First Shows of 2011 Edition

The art world in East City is off to a great start in 2011 with five openings this weekend to attend featuring everything from photography, painting, collage and artists who play live music at their openings!

Friday January 7, 2011

The Tubman-Mahan Gallery (3938 Benning Road NE) opens “Urban Landscapes from DC to Denmark” by photographer Kimberly Gaines.  The reception begins at 6:30pm and ends at 8:00pm.  The exhibition runs through January 22, 2011.

Saturday January 8, 2011

CITY Gallery (804 H Street NE) opens “Leaves, Words and Screens” by Ronnie Spiewak.  Spiewak’s masterful collage work will open to the public from 6pm to 9pm and the exhibition runs through January 29, 2011.

The Fridge (rear alley behind 516 8th Street SE) presents a series of new paintings by Laura Elkins entitled “White House Negligee” inspired by portraits of America’s First Ladies.  The opening will be held from 7pm to 9pm and runs through January 30, 2011.  In case you miss the opening, the artist will be interviewed Henry Thaggert on Saturday January 22 from 5pm to 6pm.

At Corner Store Arts (900 South Carolina Avenue SE) visual artist and musician Dianna Quinn will show her latest series of “Bubble Splash” paintings which are made using a hot air gun and a wide array of materials including stencils and spray paint.  Quinn and her band Honky Tonk Confidential will perform at her opening.  The party starts at 6pm.

Capitol Hill Arts Workshop (545 7th Street SE) hosts its Fifth Annual Juried Photography Exhibition.  Doors open at 5pm and the reception ends at 7pm. The exhibition runs through February 4, 2011.
