Hill Buzz

I don’t mind winter in DC too much but when the Firefox weather tool bar shows frozen thermometers and wintery mix spilling out of gray clouds, I can’t help but daydream about moving to warmer climates.  Like I’ve said before, if it’s going to be this cold, I want snow and all the fun that comes in playing in it.  But I still say we are going to miss out this year.

As you sit there and thaw out from a frigid commute to work, I have an extra long list of links of reading for you to catch up on today:

  • Smith Commons has been the hot topic as of late, with reviews by Capital Cooking, DCist, We Love DC, Capitol Bites, and Brightest Young Things.
  • The Housing Complex reported that moratorium talk on Barracks Row have caused many potential business owners to look elsewhere.  EMMCA summarized the last few  Retail Mix Task Force forums and meetings on it’s blog; the draft recommendations by the Task Force recommend that the ANC not pursue a moratorium and commissioners who have attended the meetings have indicated that they do not support moratoriums at this time.  In addition, retail mix issues will continued to be studied by a task force comprised of a number of neighborhood groups.
  • New Hill East has apparently been filled with talk about dog poop.  TBD framed up the “Dog Poop Alley” story shared on our local listserv.
  • JD Land posted her 2011 State of the Hood.
  • Plans for development of the space above the train tracks behind Union Station are back in the news.  Housing Complex, DCist and EMMCA take a look at the issues.
  • The Pint Glass reported that plans for The Queen Vic are still in the works, maybe even opening in February.
  • The mystery box on H Street has finally been removed!  But there’s still no word on where it came from.  TBD has the story.
  • TBD also reported that the new location for the streetcar power substation may impact Khan’s BBQ’s plans to add sidewalk seating.
  • H Street Great Street has the details about pizza coming to H Street.
