Update on Surge in Capitol Hill Burglaries

Posted to Flickr by alancleaver_2000

After yesterday’s post about the recent surge in burglaries over the past few weeks on Capitol Hill (and my own experience), the police responded — Captain Mike Gottert is holding a meeting to address this uptick in crime tonight at Substation 1D1, 500 E Street SE, at 7:30pm.

NBC4 also responded to the story — coming to my house (video below) and contacting MPD’s First District Commander David Kamperin.

Kamperin told NBC4 that he’s enacted a plan to address the surge in burglaries. He’s deploying more officers on foot and bike patrols and sending out more plainclothes officers in unmarked cars during the day. The department is also investigating whether any recently paroled burglars have moved into the area. And the police are now collecting evidence (fingerprints, etc.) at all break-ins, even when  nothing has been taken.

I’m glad the police are so responsive to our concerns, but I don’t know about a meeting on election eve. Is there a chance to maybe push it back?

Get Pat Collins on it stat!

Seriously, why people don’t have bars on their doors is beyond me. My english bsmt has them as does the one two house down…the one between us doesn’t…Whose house do you think got burglarized?

A neighbor of mine on 5th Street NE had requested that Election night meeting with Captain Gottert. We’ve had a rash of burglaries and robberies in just a few blocks. The meeting was a good discussion. Nineteen residents from the blocks near Union Station attended. Many of us will also attend the PSA 102 monthly meeting next Tuesday.

I think the talk about fleeing to the surburbs because of this is quite silly!

Saw you on the news, so sorry about your home! Getting an alarm sounds like a great idea though. :-/ Love the blog!
